ZINES

These zines are the result of a weird rabbit hole I found myself tumbling down while working on my degree in creative writing.

At the time, I needed a subject that wasn’t too personal. I rediscovered an old text I had picked up at Lancaster Central Market about witchcraft and hexes. This led me to the Long Lost Friend by John George Hohman, a grimoire of local significance within the Pennsylvania Dutch community. I learned about pow-wowwing, remedies, healing, and the white magic of the Amish and Mennonite sects. I used the himmelsbrief and the historic events surrounding it to create the poems found in these zines.
